Cassidy’s Gold Pine Motor Inn and Restaurant opened in April 1964 off of the Hinckley exit on the newly constructed Interstate 35. The section of I-35 from Hinckley to Sandstone was the first segment of freeway that replaced the old road into Duluth and up the north shore. Sadly, the restaurant closed in 2020 after 50 years of ownership by the Welcher family.

Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs from John’s Place in Minneapolis
Woo Yee Sing and his brother Woo Du Sing opened the first Chinese restaurant in Minneapolis. The brothers decided in 1903 to move the restaurant into a larger, second-floor space at 28 South Sixth Street. The new address came with a new name, Yuen Faung Low. Customers knew Woo Yee as John, so they started calling the restaurant John’s Place. The Sing family operated the restaurant until 1967.
Chili from Billy’s Bar & Grill in Anoka
Charles G. Jackson immigrated to the U.S. and purchased the Anoka House, the oldest hotel in Anoka, Minnesota, in 1877. Despite a devastating 1884 fire, the hotel was rebuilt and expanded, becoming a community hub with amenities like a dining room, cigar store, and pool tables. In 1976, Mary Helen Cutter DeLong saved it from the threat of demolition and initiated restoration efforts. Today, the old hotel no longer caters to overnight guests but is home to Billy’s Bar & Grill.

Italian Goulash from the Pickwick in Duluth
When Prohibition ended in 1933, the Pickwick pulled the first stein of real beer in town since Duluth went dry in 1917. Since then, the Pickwick has gained a reputation for great food in addition to their beer selection. This goulash recipe made its debut on the menu in the 1970s.

Curt Carlson envisioned a fleet of hotels under the Radisson name in a ring of suburbs around his downtown Minneapolis flagship hotel. Each new hotel would have a theme, and the theme at Radisson Inn Plymouth was Japanese tranquility. This dish was served in the Japanese restaurant, Tozai.
Burnt Butter Fettuccine from the King’s Inn in St. Louis Park
When Frank Theros opened his first restaurant in the 1920s, he couldn’t have known that he was setting up a legacy that would last nearly a century. He opened the King’s Inn in 1964 with his two sons. This dish was served there in the 1970s.

For more than five decades, Van’s Cafe in Brainerd was the place to meet for a great meal in a stylish Art Deco atmosphere. The Cafe was featured in the Ford Treasury of Favorite Recipes from Famous Eating Places in 1963.
Seafood Crepes from Forepaugh’s Restaurant in Saint Paul
